Dr Roddam Narasimha is presently a DST Year-of-Science Professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research was educated at the University College of Engineering and at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and obtained his PhD at the California Institute of Technology, USA, in 1961. He joined the Indian Institute of Science in 1962 and was associated with the Department of Aerospace Engineering in various capacities from that date till 1999. In 1982 he founded the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences (now Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences), which he headed till 1989. During 1984 to 1993 he was Director of the NationalAerospace Laboratories. For many years since 1982 he held a visiting position at Caltech, as Clark B Millikan Professor or Sherman Fair child Distinguished Scholar. During 1989-90 he was Jawaharlal Nehru Professor of Engineering at Cambridge University in England. He has also held visiting positions at NASA Langley, Strathclyde, University of Brussels, Adelaide University etc. From1990 to 1994 he was INSA Golden Jubilee Research Professor, and from 1994 to1999 the ISRO K R Ramanathan Distinguished Professor, at IISc/JNCASR. He was Director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies during 1997-2004. He is the author of more than 250 research publications, mostly in fluid mechanics, aerospace science and atmospheric dynamics.
