The Faculty of Sciences was established in the year 1973 with the Chemistry Botany Zoology (CBZ) combination. In 1975 the Physics Chemistry Mathematics (PCM) combination was introduced and in 1988 the Physics Mathematics Computer science (PMC) combination was started. Subsequently, over the years the institution introduced combinations with Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Psychology at the undergraduate level so as to meet the changing needs of the learner community. The PG program in Biotechnology was started in 2004 and PG Biochemistry was started in 2006. The Faculty of Sciences also has a Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility recognized by DBT,Govt. of India, the Biotechnology Finishing School (BTFS), a unique initiative supported by Govt. of Karnataka towards employment. Fund for Infrastructure in Science and Technology (FIST), initiated by DST, Govt. of India has been awarded for promoting basic sciences. The Biotechnology Research Centre recognized by Bangalore University is engaged in projects in cutting edge areas such as Cancer Biology, Diabetes, Endocrinology, In-silico Biology and Neurophysiology. The institution has been awarded the Star College Status by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India and the Faculty of Sciences has been ranked by India Today Neilsen Survey, 2015 as 42nd among the best 50 Science colleges in India and 6th best among colleges in Bangalore City.
