The luminary visionary Dr. K.N.V Shastri envisioned a premium institute with a goal to empower girl child. He nurtured this ambition since he adored the valour, courage and administrative skills of Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni.
Lakshmi Ammanni was born in 1742 as the daughter of Gopalraje Urs who was the killedar of Tiruchinapoly. She was married to Krishnaraja Wodeyar II and expired at the age of 68 in 1810. Till date she is remembered as a great woman of – “ Unremitting in Zeal, uncompromised as truth and unmoved by imminent fear ”. Her skill enthusiasm and zeal were only equalled by her quickness of grasp and readiness of perception. A woman of singular talent and rare intellectual vigour exhibiting a rare statewomenship apart from her genre.
Rani Lakshmi Ammanni answers to the ideal of women hood in history and serves as example of all Indian women today at the cross roads in the pursuit of values.
Her regency in the period 1799 to 1810 are the seed time of development, education and rich harvest of culture and harmony.
It was the dying wish of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV to fill the gap in the series of institutions in Mysore named after the royal personages connected with its history. Also there was a lacunae of absence of anything in commemoration of her highness Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni and was a matter of regret. According to Maharaja the best remedy to transform her “ Memory to posterity” was to establish a women college in her name and by 1930 he decided to execute this in Bangalore. A resolution was passed by the Mysore University Senate, but the proposal to name it after maharani was postponed.
Dr. Kashi Nageshwara Venkatasubba Shastri ( 1895-1984) a noted Scholar in history and was the former employee of Mysore palace was handed the task of fulfilling maharaja’s wish.
Dr. K.N.V Shastri made the dream reality by establishing Maharani Lakshmi College in the year 1972 with 12 students in a rented rooms of nearby Government Boys College at Malleshwarm 18th cross. Later the college functioned in its own building constructed on the land generously donated by then Late chief minister Devraj Urs.
Today, the institution has grown in terms of quality and recognition with a Vision to “Empower Women throughEeducation for Character Formation”. All the activities are centred around the motto of the college ‘ “Sheelam Parama Bhushanam”
