Research

The last ten years have seen Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College for Women (now mLAC) taking meticulous and meaningful steps to build reservoirs of intellectual wealth and academic excellence. In the process, research centre at mLAC has been approved and received several research applauds from the Department of Biotechnology, Department of Science & Technology, University Grants Commission, Karnataka State Science and Technology Council and many more government affiliated bodies. Each department at mLAC is geared to meet the same demanding standards to create great professionals and citizens by inspiring the women scientist in many ways.

Research has always been an area of paramount importance to mLACians. The importance increased tremendously after obtaining the Autonomous status. There has been a dramatic rise in the publications, doctoral degree awards and grants awarded by funding agencies since then. Infrastructure is majorly supported by DST-FIST, DBT-Bioinformatics facility, Biotechnology Skill Enhancement Program (BiSEP) and University Grant Commission.

To meet the demand, mLAC research centre is furnished with STATE OF THE ART Laboratories and experienced staff. The major vision and mission involved to nurture and promote research activities of global standards. The research committee facilitates and helps faculties to take up research in all disciplines, writing grants and conducts workshops and conferences to upgrade faculties in cut through research skills, thereby, improving yield in terms of grants, research innovation, intellectual property and publications.

Code of Ethics in Research

Code of Ethics
Ethics Committee
Plagiarism Check

mLAC-Autonomous has enforced or mandated research supervisors or guides, scholars, and a system of appraisal of academic and research work following the completion of master and doctoral degrees in the form of theses, dissertations, research publications, book chapters, and other similar work that reflect the highest level of academic integrity and originality as stipulated by the college and the University Grant Commission (UGC). mLAC-Autonomous agrees to abide by the provisions outlined in the UGC's proposed policy on Academic Integrity and Plagiarism Prevention in Higher Educational Institutional Regulations, 2018.Folio No- F.I-18/2010 (CPP-II).

The college has created an institutional ethics committee for research involving animal subjects. mLAC-Autonomous places a high focus on encouraging academics to follow ethical principles established by the college and the UGC in carrying out research activities. The Internal Animal Ethical Committee (IAEC) must approve the research proposal.

Another crucial requirement imposed by the institution for all research activities, such as publication submission, dissertation submission, or project proposal submission, is plagiarism check. To do the above-mentioned action, plagiarism software is made available in the mLAC on a demand basis through librarian. The college promotes seed funding projects as well as departments to hold workshops based on research activities, where ethics in research is an important component. Faculty members are also made aware of IPR, patents, and ethics in research through invited talks.

mLAC-Autonomous follows the code of ethics as per the Bangalore university guidelines and as per letter issued by UGC D.O. No.F.1.1/2018

A Genome-guided investigation of Essential Metabolite Biosynthetic Pathways in Pomegaranate (Punica granatum) peel and seeds

Pomegranate is a valuable crop and known for its therapeutic values. Our lab has already investigated pomegranate peel’s anti-diabetic properties in-vivo and anti-cancerous properties in-silico. We propose to sequence the whole pomegranate genome, which will be first of its kind.

Significance of this project:

The purpose of this project is to -

  • Whole genome sequence of pomegranate with comprehensive functional, annotations under multi-levels (such as gene, protein function and protein structure),
  • Comparative analyses between non model pomegranate and model plants using different algorithms,
  • Composed sequences; protein-protein interaction and pathway analysis

CCSEA Approval Letter

To initiate animal research at the BLiSc animal facility, all research projects involving use of animals require necessary approvals that are subject to the authority of IAUC (Internal Animal Users Committee) and IAEC (Institutional Animal Ethics Committee), regardless of funding source or other regulatory requirements.

IAEC APPROVALS

The IAEC has been constituted according to the CPCSEA (Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals) norms to supervise and evaluate all aspects of the animal care and use program. The IAEC approval of all the animal research proposals is a statutory requirement. There are two IAECs on campus – NCBS and InStem. The animal related research proposals are proposed using the CPCSEA “Form B” as per rule 8(a). The links to mLAC Form B, IAEC Yearly progress report and guidelines for filling the Form B can be found below. Please visit the IAEC Project Proposal Flowchart to guide you on all the different institutional pre-requisites necessary. The IAEC meets biannually, usually in the months of June and December. Prior to IAEC committee meeting, ACRC management will categorize your projects and prompt you for following submissions according to your category. Below are the categories of IAEC projects and their corresponding documents required to be submitted to the IAEC committee. Please note all the animal research proposals will be pre-reviewed by the IAUC and then submitted to the IAEC for review.

NEW PROJECTS –  Submit NEW FORM B

For new projects, please submit the Form B.  Projects are approved for a maximum of three years.

RENEWAL PROJECTS – Submit NEW FORM B + IAEC YEARLY PROGRESS REPORT

For ongoing projects reaching their “IAEC approved END date” (3rd year anniversary); project renewal need to submitted via “Form B”. Also, submit the yearly progress report.

MODIFIED PROJECTS – Submit MODIFIED FORM B + IAEC YEARLY PROGRESS REPORT

- For ongoing project modifications, the previously approved Form B of the project needs to be resubmitted clearly mentioning the project modifications/add-ons in distinctly visible BOLD or Underlined text. The project modifications could include; numbers/strains of experimental animals, additional procedures, usage of new drugs/chemicals, new collaborators or new end-users.

APPROVED/ONGOING PROJECTS – Submit PREVIOUSLY APPROVED FORM B + IAEC YEARLY PROGRESS REPORT

- Upon IAEC approval, a IAEC Yearly Progress Report with the corresponding approved Form B needs be submitted every year for yearly extension.

COMPLETED PROJECTS – Submit IAEC YEARLY PROGRESS REPORT

- For completed projects, please state the research proposal has been completed and no extension is required in the IAEC Yearly Progress Report.
