Mission & History

The Journalism Department at mLAC became functional in the 2004-2005 academic year with an inaugural batch of 18 students. Today, first-year admissions have seen nearly a 100% increase, reflecting the program's growing prestige.

The core forte of Journalism is engaging with the diverse opinions expressed by numerous individuals. We leave no stone unturned in equipping our students with the precise skills required to navigate and lead in the fast-paced media industry.

Industry Integration & Initiatives

To make the coursework lively, educative, and confidence-building, the department employs a wholesome development program featuring hands-on experiences:

  • Media Visits & Practical Training: Regular field visits to Press, Radio, and TV stations. Recent highlights include presenting research papers at national seminars and attending Fact-Checking workshops at the Bangalore Press Club.
  • Guest Lectures & Expert Talks: Frequent interactions with media stalwarts, including investigative journalists (Vijayalakshmi Shibaroor), renowned editors (Vishveshwar Bhat), development journalists, filmmakers, and AIR news anchors.

Placements & Student Achievements

Our students are highly active in extracurriculars, consistently winning state and national-level prizes in Radio Jockeying (RJ), News Reading, Debates, Advertising, and Sports.

Graduates have secured excellent placements across reputed print and electronic media, taking on roles such as Reporters, Sub-editors, Segment Writers, and Production Associates.

  • Higher Education: Many alumni pursue advanced degrees in Mass Communication and Electronic Media at prestigious institutions like Bangalore University, REVA University, and NMKRV.

Course Outcomes: B.A. Journalism

I Year: Fundamentals & Media Literacy

  • Semester I (Introduction to Communication & Practicals):
    • Become media literate by understanding core communication concepts and acquiring foundational technology skills.
    • Prepare and deliver effective, professional multimedia presentations.
  • Semester II (Fundamentals of Journalism & Practicals):
    • Develop core media skills and analyze emerging trends in print and mass media content.
    • Acquire practical skills in content analysis, newsletter creation, and wall-paper designing.
    • Understand the components and significance of regional print media.

II Year: Audio-Visual Media & Media Law

  • Semester III (Audio Visual Media & Practicals):
    • Create and design emerging media products, including blogs, digital audio/video, and social media content.
    • Master the basics of scriptwriting, RJing, film analysis, short video documentaries, and YouTube content creation.
    • Gain insight into the history of electronic/online media and various TV/Radio program formats.
  • Semester IV (Media and Related Law & Practicals):
    • Comprehend the role of the press in a democratic society and the crucial importance of freedom of the press.
    • Acquire knowledge of media laws, ethics, and government acts (Cyber Law, RTI, Contempt of Court, Sedition).
    • Examine relevant case studies to deal with complex ethical issues in professional life.

III Year: Advanced Reporting, Editing & Management

  • Semester V:
    • Reporting: Write a variety of mass media inputs (news stories, press releases). Prepare interview schedules to conduct professional interviews. Master specialized reporting (crime, court, science, and technology).
    • Editing: Develop skills in translation, content editing, proofreading, newspaper page design, and hands-on photography.
  • Semester VI:
    • Media Management: Gain knowledge on the structure, functioning, and ownership patterns of newspaper organizations. Understand the policies to launch a TV channel, Radio station, or community radio center.
    • Advertising and Public Relations: Master ad copywriting, campaign designing, and marketing. Recognize the role of PR in government and corporate sectors. Get trained in publicity, propaganda, and public opinion management.
