Mission & Academic Approach

The B.A. Political Science program is a comprehensive, credit-based scheme spread across six semesters. Our primary objective is to provide students with a firm grounding in the discipline while imbibing sharp analytical skills.

We strive to develop a realistic, pragmatic perspective on the complex local, national, regional, and international issues that shape our world today. To keep pace with changing times and larger societal needs, the syllabus is continuously updated to feature new, innovative papers and extensive reading lists.

Course Outcomes: B.A. Political Science

I Year: Foundations of Political Science

  • Semester I (Core Concepts of Political Science):
    • Understand the nature, meaning, and importance of Political Science and its relationship with other social sciences.
    • Analyze the theories and elements of the state, sovereignty, and law in the age of globalization.
    • Elucidate the origins and dynamics of power, authority, and legitimacy.
  • Semester II (Political Theory):
    • Familiarize with the traditions of political theory and evaluate the challenges to contemporary democracy.
    • Grasp the socio-economic and legal importance of rights, duties, justice, and equality.
    • Explore modern political concepts including Imperialism, Neo-colonialism, Modernism, and Post-modernism.

II Year: Administration & Philosophical Thought

  • Semester III (Public Administration):
    • Examine the scope of public and private administration, organizational principles, and management functions within the Indian context.
    • Understand personnel management, including recruitment, training, promotion, and morale.
    • Analyze financial administration (budgeting, auditing, zero-based budgets) and contemporary trends like E-governance and good governance.
  • Semester IV (Political Thought - Eastern and Western):
    • Analyze ancient Greek philosophy (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle) and medieval thought (St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas).
    • Examine Marxist philosophy in the context of societal transformation (Lenin, Mao Tse Tung).
    • Familiarize with foundational Indian political thought, focusing on Manusmriti, Dandaniti, the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata, and Kautilya’s theories.

III Year: Constitutions & Global Politics

  • Semester V (Indian Constitution & International Politics):
    • Indian Constitution & Institutional Framework: Deep dive into the making of the Constitution, fundamental rights/duties, and the powers/functions of the Union and State Executives, Legislatures, and the Judiciary (High Court & Supreme Court).
    • International Politics: Understand theories of national power, interest, diplomacy, and foreign policy. Explore international law, human rights, and approaches to global peace (collective security, balance of power, disarmament).
  • Semester VI (Comparative Systems & International Institutions):
    • Major Constitutional Systems: Conduct a comparative study of the political, legislative, executive, and judicial systems of the UK, the United States, Russia, and Switzerland.
    • International Institutions: Analyze the working of global and regional bodies (League of Nations, UN, WTO, ASEAN, SAARC, BRICS). Evaluate the foreign policies of major global powers (US, Russia, China) and trace the evolution, determinants, and continuities of India’s foreign policy.
