Department of Zoology, mLAC had organised a Five days Hands-on workshop on Drosophila culture & Dissection between 11th August 2023 to 1st September from 8.00 am to 11.00 am in the Zoology lab. The session started with a brief introduction about Hema S and Ranjitha H.R, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, mLAC. Around 55, 1st B.Sc. Zoology students took part in the workshop.
Workshop Highlights:
- Introduction to Drosophila: The workshop commenced with an informative session on the biology and importance of Drosophila as a model organism in genetic research.
- Drosophila Culture Techniques: Participants were provided hands-on training in setting up and maintaining Drosophila cultures. This included preparing culture media, handling and transferring flies, and monitoring their growth and development.
- Dissection Skills: A significant portion of the workshop was dedicated to teaching participants how to perform precise Drosophila dissections. This involved the proper use of dissection tools and techniques.
- Genetics and Research Applications: The workshop also covered the application of Drosophila in genetic research, including the study of inheritance patterns, mutation analysis, and the development of transgenic lines.
- Q&A and Discussion: Throughout the workshop, there were interactive sessions and discussions where participants could ask questions and share their experiences.

Students gave positive feedback about the session and referred it as very informative workshop.
