Biotechnology Department at MLACW Secures ₹1 Crore Grant for “BT Finishing School” Initiative by Govt of Karnataka (KIT-BT)

Bangalore, May 2011 — In a significant boost to biotechnology education and skill development, the Department of Biotechnology has been awarded a prestigious grant of ₹1 crore for its “BT Finishing School” program, initiated in 2010. The achievement reflects the department’s commitment to advancing industry-ready training and academic excellence.

The grant was secured under the leadership of Dr. T. L. Shantha, Director, Dr. Vijaya Prakash, Principal, mLAC, and Dr. M. B. Nagaveni, Dean of Science, whose strategic vision and guidance played a pivotal role in shaping the program. The initiative (project) was coordinated by Dr. Sushil Kumar Middha, who oversaw its development and implementation. Other faculties present were Dr. Shashikala A., Ms. Sarsawathi, Ms. Kamala A, Ms. Babitha B., Ms. Usha T., Dr. Vyjanthi, Dr. deepti Saini, Dr. Priyanka Samji, Ms. Jayashri, Ms. Aruna HK, Ms. Hemavathi E, Dr. Renuka Srihari, and Mr. Ravi Rawat, CTO from IOCB, Bangalore.

The “BT Finishing School” program aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements by equipping students with practical skills, hands-on training, and exposure to real-world biotechnology applications. The funding is expected to enhance infrastructure, facilitate advanced training modules, and strengthen collaborations with industry partners.

The award was handed over by Shri Yediyurappa, Chief Minister (CM), Karnataka and a noted Nobel laureate.

This achievement positions the department as a key contributor to biotechnology education and workforce development, reinforcing its role in preparing students for emerging opportunities in the life sciences sector.
